ABOUT SAME-DAY SURGERY
Before Surgery

Notify your surgeon of any changes in your physical condition that might cause your surgery to be cancelled or rescheduled — for example, a cold, fever, or persistent cough.

Arrange for a family member or friend to accompany you to and from High Plains Surgery Center.

Plan to bring these items with you:

  • All paperwork from your surgeon’s office
  • Your insurance information and cards
  • Applicable co-payments, coinsurance, and or deductible payments
  • A list of all your medications, including vitamins and supplements
  • Case for eye glasses or contact lenses

No food or drink, including water, after midnight prior to your surgery.

The Day of Surgery
A family member or friend must accompany you to and from High Plains Surgery Center.

Carefully follow all of your doctor’s pre-surgery instructions.

Bathe or shower prior to coming to the surgery center. Wear loose, comfortable clothes that are easy to put on and to fasten.

Leave your valuables at home. The surgery center cannot be responsible for lost or damaged personal belongings.

Bring the following items with you:

After Surgery

You will be closely monitored by the High Plains Surgery Center staff.

When you are awake and able to move around, the family member or friend who accompanied you to the surgery center will be allowed to visit you.

You will remain in the recovery area until your surgeon or anesthesiologist determines that you are ready to be discharged.

Once you are ready to go home, a nurse will review your discharge instructions with you, and you will receive a written copy of them.

Because it is not safe, you should not

  • Be home by yourself for the first 24 hours following surgery
  • Drive a vehicle for at least 24 hours after surgery

Do not sign any contracts or legal documents for 24 hours following your surgery.

If you have questions after your surgery, please contact your surgeon. Surgery center staff will call you at home to check that you are doing well.

You will receive a patient satisfaction survey after your surgery. Please complete and return it. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Children’s Surgery

Notify your child’s surgeon of any changes in his/her physical condition that might cause cancellation or rescheduling of surgery — for example, a cold, fever, or persistent cough.

Talk with your child about the upcoming surgery. Make sure your child knows that you will be there while the surgery is going on and when he/she wakes up.

Taking your child for a tour of High Plains Surgery Center before the day of surgery so that he/she will know what to expect may lessen anxiety for both of you.

Let your child bring a favorite toy or blanket on the day of surgery.

Have one adult tend to the child in the car on the way home and another adult drive.
